De opdracht heeft tot doel om op basis van uit te voeren studiewerk alternatieven voor renovatie van Sas Slijkens op het Kanaal Gent-Oostende te identificeren, te onderzoeken en af te wegen voor selectie van een voorkeursalternatief. Daarbij wordt in de opdracht ook een project-MER opgemaakt. Het voorkeursalternatief wordt uitgewerkt tot voorontwerp.

Desgevallend wordt op basis van het voorontwerp en de project-MER een dossier voor aanvraag van de omgevingsvergunning voor de renovatie van Sas Slijkens opgemaakt. Zowel de project-MER procedure als de procedure voor omgevingsvergunning worden daarbij volledig opgevolgd en begeleid. Tot slot is in de opdracht een voorwaardelijk gedeelte voorzien ter begeleiding van het verder traject van het renovatieproject, bv. adviesverlening in functie van de latere opmaak van een aanbestedingsontwerp, etc.
