Die Fregatten Klasse 124 (F124) sind als Mehrzweckschiffe auch für Geleitschutz und Seeraumkontrolle konzipiert. Für den weitreichenden Waffeneinsatz gegen Seeziele ist die F124 derzeit mit dem Lenkflugkörper (LFK)-System Harpoon ausgerüstet. Dieses muss ersetzt werden.

Als Ersatzsystem soll das LFK-System Naval Strike Missile (NSM) integriert werden.
